Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital has undertaken a series of upgrades to improve healthcare delivery, focusing on patient care and service efficiency.

Among the key developments is the establishment of six Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) beds and eight Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) beds, providing critical care for newborns and young children.

Additionally, the hospital has introduced a 14-bed renal unit to cater to the increasing number of patients requiring dialysis services.

During an inspection of these ongoing improvements, Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare services.

“With the rising demand for medical services, it is our duty to ensure the availability of adequate facilities. I am here to assess the progress, and I am pleased with what has been accomplished,” Governor Sakaja stated.

He emphasized that the newly established renal unit will enhance access to dialysis treatment for patients in need.

“Other key improvements include six modern operating theatres to boost surgical services, an expanded Accident and Emergency Unit to handle critical cases more effectively, and a Smart Blood Bank to ensure the timely availability of life-saving transfusions,” he added.

The hospital has also installed a state-of-the-art Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine, significantly enhancing diagnostic capabilities. Nairobi County Executive for Health and Nutrition, Suzanne Silantoi, highlighted the county’s focus on maternal and child health, citing the launch of a new Mother and Child Health (MCH) Clinic.

“This clinic will offer essential services such as family planning, cancer screening, growth monitoring, and nutrition support,” she explained.

To improve efficiency in service delivery, the hospital has introduced a Customer Care Centre and a Telephone Exchange Unit, facilitating better communication between patients, families, and healthcare providers. Chief Officer for Health Facilities, Hibraheem Otieno, noted additional measures taken to promote environmental sustainability.

“The hospital has installed a medical waste shredder and a microwave sterilizer to improve waste management,” Otieno confirmed.

Governor Sakaja reiterated that these upgrades are part of a broader strategy to enhance healthcare services across Nairobi. He also reaffirmed ongoing efforts to complete a new 400-bed wing at Mutuini County Hospital, further expanding the county’s healthcare capacity.
