The Kenya Medical
Practitioners, Pharmacists Dentists Union (KMPDU) has issued a red notice to
Nakuru, Laikipia and Kajiado counties for violating the Return-to-Work formula
and Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) which sought to address issues
affecting the health sector.
In a statement to
newsrooms after the South Rift Annual General Meeting held in Nakuru, KMPDU Secretary
General Dr. Davji Atellah urged the three counties to honour the two agreements
by May 24, 2025, failure to which he pointed out that doctors would proceed on
strike.
"Let it be
clear: We will no longer wait for justice; we will enforce it. Counties must
act. Healthcare cannot be held hostage by inaction," he stated.
Further, Dr. Atellah
lauded new Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale for his efforts in resolving
long-standing issues within the sector.
"We commend
the progress made particularly on arrears, internship placements, postgraduate
training, promotions, and medical insurance. We acknowledge the Ministry of
Health's renewed momentum under the new CS in resolving long-standing issues,"
he stated.
Following his
recent appointment as Health CS, Duale confirmed that the posting of medical
interns would commence on July 1, 2025, citing that the process would be
carried out by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
The resolve came
after the CS held a meeting with health union leaders on April 10, 2025, where
both parties agreed to solve the doctors' pay arrears and posting of interns in
a fortnight.
“We expect this
matter to be resolved within two weeks,” Dr. Atellah said at the time.
