Kirinyaga: Five police officers under probe for robbing businessman of Ksh.80K

Five officers based at the Kagio Police Station in Ndia, Kirinyaga County, are under investigation for allegedly robbing a Murang'a businessman of Ksh.80,000.

The businessman is said to have been driving along the Kagio-Sagana road in a lorry ferrying animal hay on December 8, 2021 when he was intercepted by a police land cruiser on allegations of ferrying bhang.

According to Kirinyaga Police Commander Mathew Mang'ira, the officers searched the vehicle but did not recover any drugs during the 2am incident.

The businessman claims the police insisted that they go to Kagio Police Station and demanded Ksh.200,000 from him while on their way.

Mr. Mang'ira said the businessman told the officers he did not have the money, upon which he was allegedly directed to park his truck at a car wash within Kagio town, bundled into a police vehicle and directed to withdraw cash from his mobile bank account.

The officers reportedly took him to an ATM machine at a nearby petrol station where he withdrew Ksh.80,000 and gave it to the officers to secure his release at around 4am.

Mr. Mang'ira said an identification parade was conducted and the businessman picked out the 5 officers, who include 4 constables and a corporal.

“We have presented the file to the DPP’s office and if the officers are proved they will be arrested and prosecuted,” said the police commander.

Residents of Kagio have been protesting against police officers in the area over what they say is harassment, calling for their transfers .

“We want Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho, who is a local resident, to take action. We respect other police stations in Kirinyaga County but Kagio Police Station is rotten,” said Peter Waweru, one of the residents.
