Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok has been reassigned to the State Department for Tourism in the latest government reshuffle.

In a signed statement by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, Bitok will be replaced by John Lekakeny Ololtuaa, who previously held the Tourism PS docket.

According to Koskei, the re-assignments take effect forthwith.

In March 2025, Bitok took over as PS Basic Education after swapping dockets with Belio Kipsang, who moved to Immigration.

Ololtuaa takes over the education docket at a time when pressure mounts on the government to restore normalcy to schools following the recent wave of unrest, leading to the closure of several schools.

In his last decree in the education docket, PS Bitok ruled out the possibility of an early mid-term break, citing that learning remains largely uninterrupted in most schools.

"We have no plans for an unscheduled closure of schools. Learning is continuing normally in 99 percent of our schools, while only around 0.8 percent have experienced challenges. Our focus is on addressing issues in the affected institutions while ensuring that all learners continue with their education without disruption," Bitok stated on June 4, 2026.
