KHRC challenges increase of motor vehicle insurance premiums by up to 50%

The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has
moved to court under a certificate of urgency to challenge the move by
insurance companies to increase motor vehicle insurance premiums by up to 50%
starting this year.
The petition lists the Insurance Regulatory
Authority as the respondent and the Association of Kenya Insurers as an
interested party.
KHRC wants the courts to issue conservatory
orders suspending the increase of premiums as well as the decision to exclude
motor vehicles which are more than 12 years old, or valued at less than Ksh.600,000
from comprehensive cover.
The human rights body argues that as motor
vehicle insurance is mandatory, the decision by insurance companies is
discriminatory, unjustified, illegal and a violation of consumer rights.
