Kenyan DCI officers arrested pursuing car theft suspect in Tanzania freed

Five DCI officers from Buruburu Police Station who were arrested in Tanzania while investigating a car theft syndicate from Nairobi have been released.

The five officers who were in the company of one motor vehicle theft suspect, namely Samuel Ngatia, were arrested on Friday after mistakenly entering Tanzania as they chased a suspected car thief.

The Buruburu-based DCI officers; CPL Ali Ibrahim, PC Joel Osinya, PC Moses Wainaina, PC Josephat Munganja, PC Moses Kiongera, arrested one Tanzanian following a lead from the Kenyan suspect within Tarakea Town in Tanzania.

The Tanzanian national however raised the alarm, and officers from Tarakea Police Station who were on patrol arrested the DCI officers for the offence of being illegally present in their country.

The officers were held in custody together with their suspect Samuel Ngatia and a Tanzanian who is believed to have been receiving stolen motor vehicles from Kenya.

The officers were investigating the rampant cases of carjackings that have led to 10 motor vehicles being reported stolen from February to date, and investigations indicate that the suspects are crossing the border with the stolen cars.
