Huldah Hiltsley Momanyi, a United States based woman from Nyamira County, has made history after winning a seat in Minnesota House of Representative; becoming the first Kenyan-born politician to hold office in the US.

Vying on a Democratic Farmer Labor (DFL) Party, she garnered 64.78 per cent (10,005) votes, with her rival, Republican Brad Olson receiving 34.95 per cent.

Following her victory, Momanyi lauded the American citizens for their vote of confidence in her; promising to be the voice of change.

“It doesn’t feel real,” she told CCX News. “I don’t think I was expecting to do that well. 65 [percent], that’s a big margin, right? That just goes to show you the work that my team has put into this race.”

“That is history in the making. Not only the first Kenyan-American in the Minnesota Legislature, but the first Kenyan-born in the whole entire U.S. to be elected into office," she added.

She will now represent the Southwestern Brooklyn Park and Osseo in the Minnesota House of Representatives.

Born in Nyamira County in 1985, Momanyi's family moved to the US nine years later where she attained three Bachelor degrees from Bethel University;  international business, international relations and reconciliation studies.

She also attained a Master's degree on Global Business Management at the same institution.
