Kenya Roads Board embarks on design audit, mapping of all black spots to curb road accidents

With close to 4,000 people losing their lives in accidents this year, the board said that the exercise was meant to come up with mitigation measures to curb road carnage.

This came as the board donated an ambulance and medical equipment to Naivasha Level IV hospital to assist in dealing with the rising cases of road accidents along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

According to Engineer Tom Omai, a director with the board, the rising number of fatal accidents in the country was worrying and hence the need to act.

Speaking after handing over the medical equipment worth over Ksh.16 million to the management, Omai said that the audit exercise had kicked off starting from Mombasa to Malaba.

Omai added that the donated medical equipment would come in handy in saving the lives of tens of accident victims seeking services in the Naivasha facility.

On his part, the superintendent in charge of the hospital Dr Bernard Warui said that the facility had handled over 1,200 victims of accidents this year.

He noted that there was an urgent need to expand the current ICU which had two beds to accommodate the rising number of accident victims.

He noted that many of the accident victims seeking services here suffer from head injuries and there is a need to expand the ICU to 15 beds and this will save more lives.

Warui attributed the high number of accidents on the Northern corridor to the design of the Nairobi-Nakuru highway against the rising number of motorists.

The medic added that construction of a dual-carriage would drastically reduce the number of accidents which were overstretching the hospital.

While thanking Kenya Roads Boards for the donation, he said that the medical equipment and ambulance would be used to rescue accident victims.
