KANU now expels suspended Secretary General Nick Salat
The Kenya African
National Union (KANU) party has officially kicked out Nick Salat as its
Secretary General, nearly three months after his suspension.
The Gideon Moi-led
party, in a statement to newsrooms on Friday, said the decision was arrived at unanimously
following a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Mombasa.
KANU, according to
the statement by Director of Communications Joseph Towett, expelled the former
MP as had been recommended by the party’s National Disciplinary Committee
following his prior suspension.
Party leader Moi
was further tasked with head-hunting and submitting to the NEC the names of suitable
individuals to step into Salat’s massive shoes.
“The meeting,
chaired by the National Chairman Gideon Moi, resolved that the report of the
National Disciplinary Committee recommending the immediate expulsion of Hon.
Nick Salat from the position of the Secretary-General of the party on account
of gross misconduct and violation of the party constitution is unanimously
adopted,” read the statement.
“The NEC mandated
the National Chairman Hon. Gideon Moi to propose for deliberations and
adoption, suitable individuals to fill the vacant national positions, including
that of the Secretary-General, on an interim basis.”
KANU suspended the vocal politician in December, after which a disciplinary committee was formed
to hear and determine his alat’s case.
A month after his
dismissal, Salat ditched the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party, which
is the umbrella under which KANU is affiliated, in support of President William
Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza alliance.
He attributed the move
to missing out on elective seats during the 2022 General Election and pledged
his support to President Ruto’s government.
“I want to assure
you that I will support you all the way. I cannot afford to be out of
government, to be away from the majority. I am back to the fold,” Salat said to
President Ruto at the Bomet Green stadium on January 15, 2023.
“Like the prodigal
son, I want to state publicly that I will back you for the presidency for the
next 10 years.”
