IEBC throws out Justus Juma's bid for presidency over invalid signatures

It is the end of the road for Justus Juma of the Justice and Freedom Party in his August presidential ambitions as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has rejected his application.

The electoral body on Thursday said Juma’s supporters’ signatures presented before it for clearance were invalid and some ID numbers duplicated.

Juma and his running mate Anne Wavinya had on Sunday been given a second chance to submit a soft copy version of the signatures by June 2.

This was after the duo failed to furnish the commission with the document, as well as failure to meet the threshold of 48,000 supporters.

Upon inspection, however, the Wafula Chebukati-led commission deemed most of the signatures wanting and said he had missed the signature threshold yet again.

Additionally, IEBC said Juma had failed the integrity test as his ID card details belong to a different person.

Chebukati is the returning officer for the vetting exercise where 18 candidates have been shortlisted.

The exercise involves verification of Identification details to see whether the candidate is a Kenyan citizen.

If one is a candidate from a political party, they must be duly registered with a party nomination certificate for the presidential ticket.

Additionally, candidates must prove clearance by the Registrar of Political Parties and also have the Ksh.200,000 nomination fee required.

They must also be also compliant with Chapter 6 of the Constitution and have 2,000 signatures from at least 24 counties, a dated Code of Conduct, as well as a bachelor’s degree.
