Health experts from Kenya and Somalia devise ways to fight polio

Health officials from Kenya and Somalia have come up with new strategies to combat cross-border diseases by addressing the underlying challenges that exist in the two countries.

During a three-day consultative meeting that brought together health officials from the border counties of Lamu and Wajir the stakeholders in the health sector said the many cases of polio reported in Kenya come from Somalia.

The officials from the two countries laid down strategies which include increasing surveillance along the border between the two countries and routine immunization through last mile vaccination of children in both nations.

“The Polio virus is spread across the borders through movement of people. We work with the refugee program in Hagadera in Dadaab and Ifo to just ensure that those who are coming in receive vaccinesm” said IRC Health Technical Coordinator Brigid Walioba.

“This meeting was basically to look for our strategies on how to be able to reach out to those children who have never accessed vaccines ,” added MOH Head of Disease Surveillance Hillary Limo.
