EACC recommends prosecution of Jirongo, FKF boss Nick Mwendwa over graft
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has now
recommended the prosecution of politician Cyrus Jirongo, Football Kenya
Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa and former Sports Permanent Secretary
Amb. Peter Kaberia.
The three are among prominent suspects in a file the
commission has forwarded to Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson
Ingonga advising that they be charged over their alleged roles in graft.
Jirongo, in the EACC report, has been fingered alongside Kuza
Farm over an alleged Ksh.250 million payment received from the Nairobi County
government in the 2019/2020 financial year.
"Investigations established that the Nairobi County
Government entered into a consent with Kuza Farm after a dispute arose on the
ownership of the same since Kuza Farm had acquired the land regularly yet the
land had been developed with public utilities. The consent was adopted as a
decree of the court," read the report.
“The payment to Kuza Farm was irregular since the title of
the Land in question had been charged to Post Bank Credit Ltd for a sum of
Kshs. 1,650,000,000. This meant one of the conditions of the decree was not
complied with since Kuza Farm was paid yet the land was encumbered."
Among other individuals EACC wants charged over the said deal
include former Nairobi County government officials such as Lydia Ogwoka, David
Ogwaro, and Halkana Waqo.
Mwendwa and Kaberia, on the other hand, are facing charges
over the loss of millions of shillings that led to Kenya being stripped of the
rights to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2018.
In the case, the anti-graft commission said its probe into the
Ksh.1.5 billion tender process for the upgrade of stadiums that were supposed to host the competition revealed that Ksh.330.5 million was paid to a
company identified as Auditel Kenya for services not rendered.
EACC hence also wants a director of Auditel Kenya and various
officials of the FKF, Ministry of Culture and Arts as well as Sports Kenya
charged.
