Businesswoman Mary Wambui on Wednesday surrendered her CZ 75 semi-automatic pistol to Runda Police Station for forwarding to the Firearms Licensing Board on her behalf.

According to the firearms authority, Wambui was illegally in possession of the handgun since her licence had expired and as such she was ordered to hand it over.

Sources said that, while submitting the gun, Wambui claimed she had initially intended to renew the expired licence but found the authority's offices closed.

She also alleged that she later travelled outside the country which further derailed her intention to restore the operating permit.

The board came to the realization that Wambui’s license had expired after detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) raided a Nairobi hotel last week to apprehend Wambui over alleged Ksh. 2.2 billion tax evasion.

The police were however not able to reel in the suspect who bolted leaving behind a handbag holding a number of personal identification documents, including her expired firearm licence.

“In the process of preparing an inventory, we came across a firearm licensing certificate issued to you by the Firearms Licensing board. The said license expired on 17/4/2020. By implication, you are illegally in possession of the firearm,” the authority’s board said on Tuesday.
