Residents of Amu Island in Lamu County continue to embrace trekking and use of donkeys as the only mode of transport to access various destinations within the Island.

The tradition that was initially used by the Sultan of Oman in the Coastal area is now a Cultural practice inherited through generations.

Occupants of the Island are marking 100 years of upholding the region's deep traditions, that include a total ban on modern modes transport, such as motor vehicles.

Only the Lamu County Commissioner's vehicle and a tractor that collects garbage are allowed to roam freely in the Island.

Lamu Governor Issah Timamy is now contemplating on introducing a second vehicle other than the County Commissioner's Car.

"We only need an ambulance to help residents head to hospital in case of an emergency," he said speaking to Citizen TV on Saturday.

The Lamu County Administration is however on a delicate balancing act as to how to deal with the ever rising population in the Island that has been confined to old structures and the narrow roads.
