21 people, dog and cat evacuated from Njiru floods
Twenty-one people had by Sunday morning been evacuated to
safety after heavy rain and flooding in Nairobi’s Njiru area, the Red Cross
said.
The humanitarian organisation said these included nine
adults and twelve children. A dog and a cat were also rescued after floods
marooned houses in Njiru’s Chokaa area.
Meanwhile, six people were rescued after a pick-up
truck ferrying people was swept away by floods in Nairobi’s Utawala area.
Heavy rains continue to wreak havoc across parts of Kenya
during the ongoing long-rains season.
So far, 83 people have been confirmed dead from flooding
after 13 more bodies were recovered on Saturday.
Four bodies were retrieved from River Kwa Musii in Makueni,
while another body was recovered in Mathare.
Three others including a man, his wife and their neighbour
drowned in Machakos after the swollen Tindanda River swept away their vehicle.
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura on Saturday said the
floods have displaced 24,196 households comprising 131,450 people.
The Meteorological Department previously said the rains are
expected to go on into June.
