Kenyans reacted with concern after a popular gossip channel shared a video of the once-popular rapper freestyling around Mirema, looking unkempt and with slurry speech.
The rapper, who has been missing in action for years now, was rapping along to his group's old hits 'Kidole' and 'Naskia Waaah'.
In May 2022, Maddox opened up on the Gengetone group's fallout, saying that, with time, fellow members Xray Taniua and Odi wa Murang'a started slipping away, missing recording sessions and doing their own projects.
"We started Boondocks gang in 2015. Things were good as we would get booked many times and had back-to-back events and shows. When corona hit is when things started changing a bit. But even then we were still a group despite the struggles brought about by the pandemic,” he said.
The singer also noted that, due to the curfews and regulations brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, the group couldn't make as much money as before.
"We thought that after a year, corona would have ended and that we would be back to performing at shows and events because that’s how we make money but with the measures that were in place at the time, things got worse,” he said.
He also added that after the more-popular members of the 'Boondocks Gang' appeared to be drifting away, he was left to single-handedly keep the YouTube channel running.
"The first time I noticed things were changing in the group was when we were set to record and not all group members were present. Exray and Odi wa Murang’a would sometimes skip sessions and other times only one of them would show up and the other doesn’t,” he recalled.
“I was left alone to drop a couple of songs to our main channel to keep it running with content.”
Attempts to reach other members of the 'Boondocks Gang' for their comment on Maddox's current state proved futile as none of them got back to us.
Over the past several years, Kenyans have witnessed many former stars and celebrities slip into depression, drug abuse and destitution as their fortunes dwindle and finances dry out.
