Nairobi Expressway records over 60K users in one year, plans underway for CBD exit
One year after the Nairobi Expressway was
launched, the operator of the infrastructure, Moja Express Company, has termed
the first year a success with over 60,000 users on the road daily.
The
company says they have so far registered over 120,000 Electronic toll users
over on the 27km road during the period, with plans in place to construct an
exit into the CBD.
“The
first year we have had ups and downs but we have managed to get over 60,000
customers daily, which is a big win for us looking that we have just been in
operations for the last 12 months,” Moja Express Company CEO Steve Zhao said.
According
to Zhao, the operation has not been without its challenges, specifically the
vandalism of critical infrastructure.
However,
the latest vandalism that occurred during the anti-government demos two weeks
ago was the most significant on the road, with the operator stating that they
will need at least a month to finish the repair works.
“We
did temporary repairs on the road to allow motorists to use it but we need at
least a month to ensure that we complete all the works properly,” stated Zhao.
Further,
Zhao says that they will soon start construction of another exit of the Expressway
along Haile Selassie Avenue which will allow users to exit directly into the
CBD.
“We
have been engaging our customers on how to best serve them and they said that
they need an extra exit directly into the CBD,” he noted.
Matatus
which were recently allowed back on the road after a series of accidents in the
beginning have had to be retrained on how to drive on the road to ensure such
incidences that were witnessed are not repeated.
