'Your days are numbered!' Ruto warns bandits as Ksh.25B set aside to purchase modern weapons

President William Ruto on Friday warned bandits roaming Laikipia County that their days are numbered.

Speaking during the official launch of the human-wildlife conflict mitigation and compensation scheme at Rumuruti Stadium in Laikipia, Ruto announced plans to procure upgraded security equipment to address the bandit menace in the county.

He also stated that the government has allocated Ksh.25 billion towards the acquisition of modern weaponry, in addition to the deployment of an extra 250 National Police Reservists (NPRs) to enhance security.

The NPRs to be deployed will bolster the current force of 360 who are already providing security in the region.

“Tumeweka mpango ya kununua equipments ya kutosha,” said Ruto.

The President assured residents of enhanced security measures to decisively tackle the bandit menace, warning bandits of dire consequences.

“Hatutakubali watu wachache watukoseshe usalama,” he added. 

With significant strides made in addressing security challenges, the President affirmed a comprehensive approach to resolving any lingering issues.

“I want to assure you that in every corner there will be security,” he stated.

The President also presided over the commissioning of the Lariak Forest wildlife electric fence in Laikipia County.

The government announced the nationwide fencing of forests and habitats of wildlife in the country and compensation of Ksh.3 billion for victims of human-wildlife conflict.

He was accompanied by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua among other leaders. 

At the same time, Anglican Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit has pleaded with the government for immediate intervention as families displaced by banditry in Baringo North endure worsening conditions in IDP camps.

“It is an unfortunate situation to have people internally displaced,” Bishop Ole Sapit said.

The situation in Baringo has deteriorated, with the number of displaced families rising to 3200 and several areas abandoned due to banditry.
