Rarieda Member of Parliament Otiende Amollo has threatened a motion to ban former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from contesting a public office in Kenya.
Otiende, who accuses Gachagua of spreading divisive politics
claims the former DP never learnt a lesson when he was impeached by the Senate
in 2024.
“Everyday you speak, we realized you never learnt your
lesson. We now want to remind you that we impeached you under article 75 of the
constitution. We did not go far enough, we only impeached you,” said Otiende.
The Rarieda legislator argued that parliament could invoke a
section of the constitution that bars Gachagua from seeking any electoral
position.
“If you continue speaking that divisive language, we will
come back for a special motion under article 75 (3), which then declares that
anyone removed from office under article 75 can not stand for any office in
life. Do not think there are no consequences. There will be consequences if you
continue with divisive language,” warned the MP during a funds drive in Rongo
on Sunday.
The former Deputy President, who has been on a charm offensive
to de-popularize his former boss William Ruto has been labeled tribal and
divisive.
Leaders from Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition and those in
support of the broad-based government accuse Gachagua of spreading ethnicity.
