The Coalition of Victims and Survivors against state violence have announced plans to demonstrate over the delayed compensation of victims and survivors of state violence as from June 16.

In a letter addressed to the Inspector General of Police on Tuesday, the coalition notified the office of their intent to conduct peaceful demos across Nairobi and other designated public spaces for 10 days.

According to the Coalition, the demonstrations would seek to demand the immediate publication of a clear compensation implementation schedule, full disclosure of all funds allocated towards victim compensation and their utilisation.

Also, the Coalition has demanded a firm and binding commitment from the government on the conclusion of the compensation process, the immediate commencement and completion of compensation for all verified victims and survivors and accountability from public officers responsible for the continued delay.

“Our demonstrations arise from the government’s continued and unjustifiable delay in compensating victims and survivors of state violence despite repeated commitments that the compensation process would be finalised by June 2026," read part of the letter.

Citing the constitution, the Coalition has called upon the police service to facilitate the exercise of their right to peaceful assembly, guaranteeing peaceful demonstrations.

At least 1,800 victims of anti-government protests have been positively identified and submitted to the government for compensation, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR).

Speaking during a sensitisation forum for protest victims in Kagio Town, Kirinyaga County, last week, KNCHR Commissioner Prof. Marion Mutugi said the commission had compiled a comprehensive list of individuals who were killed or injured during protests between 2024 and the present.

The commission has maintained that prompt compensation, rehabilitation, and accountability for human rights violations are essential to delivering justice to affected families and preventing future abuses during public demonstrations.
