Victims of the Mai Mahiu Dam tragedy in Naivasha are staring at possible eviction from their rental homes.

This comes as the government failed to fulfill its promise of covering their rent or resettling them, leaving them at the mercy of landlords.

It emerged that the planned Ksh.350 million resettlement plan by the government for the over 100 families had since collapsed.

“Majority of the victims have been living in the rental houses in Mai Mahiu town. However victims are in limbo as the state has gone mute on the planned resettlement,” area MCA Eliud Kamau said.

Among the affected are small-scale traders from the area. “Our goods were swept away by the floods,”  John Kinuthia noted.

His colleagues in the trade, including hawkers and local farmers will now be forced to start afresh.

“We have undergone untold suffering as we wait for the planned resettlement. But as things are, we have no option but to rebuild,“ they added.
