US pledges Ksh.14B to support Kenya's mission in Haiti

 Defense Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale while hosting his US counterpart Lloyd Austin said Washington and Nairobi enjoy shared commitments beyond the military-to-military relations. 

At a high-level meeting between them at the Department of Defense Headquarters, a five-year defense corporation framework was signed.

Kenya’s multi-national security support mission in Haiti praised by U.S President Joe Biden during the just concluded UN General Assembly in New York also featured during the talks at Ulinzi House.

“So, the United States remains committed to Kenya to bring stability in the region and beyond. We deeply appreciate Kenya’s friendship and leadership,” said Austin.

“ This framework is a symbol of our shared vision for a better tomorrow. Both Kenya and the U.S are driven by common purpose and together we will navigate the challenges that lie ahead,” said Duale.

Washington and Nairobi’s strengthening of defense relations is expected to enhance counter-terrorism strategies and restore stability in the Horn of Africa and beyond.

With the African Union Mission’s tenure in Somalia set to lapse amid ongoing drawdown of AU troops, Austin downplayed fears of al-Shabaab resurgence and a Taliban-like takeover of Mogadishu.

“Our concern is that again we have established some momentum and we maintain that momentum. I think countries in the region will also help and in terms of how that is going to look like, it’s going to be fine,” added Austin. 

“And from defense perspectives, we are working with the U.S in East Africa and the Great Lakes Region. And that is why we are in DRC and Somalia,” added Duale 

The framework places special emphasis on U.S-Kenya military relations in an ever-evolving world, dotted by super power rivalry and trade wars.

Austin who later met President William Ruto at State House will conclude his Africa visit in Angola.
