US Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos said the decision followed consultations with Quad partners, allies and members of the UN Security Council.
Boulos said the extension would provide additional time for diplomatic initiatives aimed at securing a humanitarian truce, a durable ceasefire and a negotiated end to the conflict.
“This extension is not a lapse in our resolve. It is an opportunity for diplomacy to deliver tangible results,” Boulos said.
He added that Washington remained committed to strengthening the arms embargo to protect civilians across Sudan from the effects of the war, including the growing threat posed by drones and other sophisticated weapons.
The US official called for an end to external military support to the warring parties, warning that continued weapons supplies and military assistance were prolonging the violence and worsening the humanitarian crisis.
“Those fueling this conflict through the continued supply of weapons and military assistance are prolonging the violence, undermining diplomatic efforts, and deepening an already catastrophic humanitarian crisis,” he said.
Boulos also urged Sudan’s neighbouring countries to stop allowing their territories to be used as platforms for advancing the conflict.
He said the extension should support efforts to end the violence, ensure unhindered humanitarian access and establish a credible transition to civilian-led government through an inclusive national dialogue.
“The Sudanese people have suffered far too much and for far too long,” Boulos said, adding that their voices and aspirations must remain central to any political process.
The United States thanked all UN Security Council members for unanimously supporting the technical rollover, saying the consensus demonstrated unity and shared responsibility in efforts to achieve peace in Sudan.
