The United Nations Global Compact is exploring
potential areas of collaboration with a Kenyan law firm to strengthen legal,
regulatory and compliance frameworks for investors in Africa and other emerging
markets.
The discussions, held on the sidelines of the UN Global
Compact Leaders Summit in New York, focused on investor trust, regulatory
compliance, risk advisory, governance and corporate credibility.
The September 22–23 summit has brought together business
leaders, policymakers, innovators, journalists and other industry stakeholders
to discuss sustainable growth and resilience in global economic systems.
Among those involved in the discussions was Kenyan lawyer and
Law Society of Kenya (LSK) member Silas Jakakimba, who engaged key UN Global
Compact officials, including Dr. Sanda Ojiambo, Assistant Secretary-General of
the United Nations and CEO and Executive Director of the UN Global Compact.
The talks come as investors increasingly look to Africa and
other emerging markets for opportunities while demanding stronger assurances on
regulatory compliance, risk management, governance and institutional
credibility.
The engagement explored possible areas of mutual interest
between SESLaw Advocates LLP firm and the UN Global Compact, including how
stronger legal and compliance frameworks can support businesses and investors
navigating Africa's evolving investment landscape.
Jakakimba said the discussions were taking place against the
backdrop of wider conversations at the United Nations General Assembly on
equitable distribution of resources and sustainable development.
“The summit seeks to strengthen collective action and
partnerships while generating solutions that can contribute to long-term
sustainable development,” he said.
He said engagement with the UN Global Compact could provide an
opportunity to develop partnerships aimed at supporting businesses and
investors operating within Africa's changing regulatory environment.
The New York summit is expected to provide a platform for
participants to exchange ideas, build partnerships and identify areas for
collective action towards sustainable and resilient economic systems.
