UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will visit impoverished, chaotic Haiti next week to show solidarity with victims of gang violence, his spokesman said Monday.

Guterres will be in Haiti on June 16, spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters.

This will be "a solidarity visit, during which he will meet men, women and children whose lives have been affected by violence," he said.

"He will see firsthand the humanitarian and security challenges facing the country, as well as efforts by national authorities and the international community to restore stability and support the Haitian people."

Guterres, whose last visit to Haiti was in July 2023, is expected to meet with Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime.
