A university Professor has been killed over a land dispute in Kakrigu village, Mbita, Homa Bay County.

Prof. Tom Odhiambo of the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) died on the spot after he was hacked on the head by two young men who also injured his father.

The land dispute reportedly resulted from an incident in which some Prof. Odhiambo’s neighbours encroached into his land some time back, forcing him to seek intervention of the area Chief and the land surveyor to determine the boundaries.

Mbita Deputy Sub-County Commissioner Peter Mutiso says Prof. Odhiambo and his father went to the disputed land ahead of the chief and surveyor.

On their arrival, two young men came in and one of them attacked Prof. Odhiambo and hacked him with the panga.

Mutiso says Prof. Odhiambo sustained serious injuries on the head, leading to his instant death while his father sustained injuries during the incident.

“They had gone there to sort land issues…it’s something they were trying to sort in a very formal way. Two young men came and hacked him and also injured the father over the land issue,” said Mutiso.

“It was supposed to be a very formal meeting, there was no sign of this kind of extremety. The father is in hospital, he sustained injuries but is in a stable condition. The suspect is at large.”

His body was moved to MED 25 Kirindo Mortuary while his father was rushed to Mbita sub-county Hospital for medication.
