Three people died and eight others were seriously injured after a shuttle matatu they were travelling in collided with a lorry at Koitamugul area on the Narok-Bomet Road in Narok County on Wednesday evening.

According to police, the driver of the matatu belonging to Galaxy Sacco was trying to avoid hitting a boda boda rider when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with an oncoming lorry.

The matatu carrying 10 passengers was heading in Narok's direction when the boda boda heading in the same direction got in the way.

"He (matatu driver) tried to avoid hitting the said motorcycle and lost control... The matatu rolled several times and hit the lorry that was travelling in the opposite direction," read a police report on the incident obtained by Citizen Digital.

Three occupants of the matatu, a woman and two men, died on the spot.

"Other unknown eight occupants sustained serious injuries," the report further reads.

The driver of the lorry and his passenger escaped unhurt, while the boda boda rider fled the scene on the motorcycle.

The injured were rushed to Longisa County Referral Hospital while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the same facility's mortuary pending identification.

The wreckage of the matatu and the slightly damaged lorry were towed to Ololulunga Police Station pending inspection.
