List of areas to be affected as Nairobi Water announces six-day supply interruption

Thousands of residents and businesses across Nairobi are set to experience a six-day water supply interruption following a planned shutdown of a key water system.

The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) has announced that the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) will shut down the Northern Collector Tunnel 1 (NCT1) system to allow for completion of works linking the Kigoro Water Treatment Plant to Gigiri and Kabete reservoirs.

The interruption is scheduled to run from 6am on Monday, April 6, 2026, to 6am on Saturday, April 11, 2026.

“Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) will shut down the Northern Collector Tunnel 1 (NCT1) System, in order to operationalise and satisfactorily conclude all contractual scope of works for the Kigoro Water Treatment Plant to Gigiri Reservoirs to Kabete Reservoirs,” stated NCWSC Acting Managing Director Martin Nang’ole in a statement.

The shutdown is expected to affect several parts of the city, including Westlands, Lavington, Kileleshwa, Kilimani, and sections of Dagoretti and Kabete.

Areas in Upper Hill, Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), KEMRI, and parts of Kibera and Lang’ata will also be impacted, alongside Karen, South B and South C, Industrial Area, and the Central Business District.

The notice further lists major installations and institutions expected to be affected, including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), the Athi River Export Processing Zone (EPZA), and several industries along Mombasa Road and North Airport Road.

Residential estates in Eastlands such as Eastleigh, Buruburu, Maringo, Huruma, and Mathare, as well as areas along Thika Road including Ngara, Pangani, and parts of Kasarani, will also face disruptions.

Specific areas affected include:

i. Riverside and Parklands areas in Westlands, Chalbi Drive, Convent Drive, Gitanga Road, Kunde Road, Hedred, Mbaazi, Masanduku, Leloghi Gardens, Ole Ndume Road, King’ara Road, Mbaazi, Riara Road and environs in Lavington.

ii. Kandara Road, Gichugu Road, Mazeras Road, Mbooni Road, Othaya Road, Kaputei, Laikipia Road, Githunguri, DoD, St. Georges School, Tembere Road and environs in Kileleshwa.

iii. University of Nairobi (UoN) and customers along Mamlaka line, and Valley Road.

iv. Argwings Kodhek Road (from Chaka Road to Hurlingham), Hurlingham Shopping Centre and environs, Mtito Andei Road, Kindaruma Road, Rose Avenue, Lower George Padmore Road, Daystar University, Denis Pritt Road, Coptic Hospital and environs in Kilimani.

v. Lower Gitanga Road, parts of Kawangware, Sunset Estate, Sohill City Estates, Kagira, Kagondo, Muhuri Road, Upper Kabiria, Mithonge, Kamwanya, Kahuho Road, Ngina Road, Kikuyu Road, Waithaka, Ndwaru Road, Upper Waithaka, Gachui, Kirigo, Dagoretti Market and Mariguini.

vi. Uthiru Muthua area, Muchugia Road, Mutego, Mutuini and environs, Gatina and its environs.

vii. Bishop Magua, Kabarnet Road, parts of Joseph Kangethe Road, Muchai Drive (from Ngong Road to Mbaruk Road), Jamhuri Estate, Upper Hill areas, KNH, KEMRI offices, Highview 1 and 2, Kenyatta Market and environs.

viii. Makina and Karanja Road and environs, Fort Jesus, Olympic, Kibera Kianda, parts of Gatwekera, parts of Ayany, Karanja Road and environs, Kibera Mwembeni and Makongeni environs, Kwa DC, Makina, Lindi, KEMRI Flats–Mbagathi Way, Highrise Estate.

ix. Kinoo Road/Joseph Kangethe junction–Togo Flats, Kang’ethe Greens (Upper Flats).

x. Southlands Estate (Jordan Court, Sinai Court, Genesis Court, Amani Court, Kwetu Court, Southend Court), Park 1 and Ngei 2 Extension, Madaraka, Hima Gardens and Siwaka, Funguo Estate, Akila 2 and environs, Rangers Court, Leeban B, Nairobi West Shopping Centre in Lang’ata.

xi. xiii. Ngara area, Forest Road, Desai Road, Kipande Road, Limuru Road, Murang’a Road and Park Road, Gigiri, Whispers Avenue, Village Market, UNEP and US Embassy.

xiv. Industries along Masai Road and adjacent areas.

xv. Eastleigh, Maringo, Buruburu Phase 3 and 4, Gikomba, Pumwani, Majengo, Shauri Moyo.

xvi. Mathare North, GSU, Rafiki, Utalii College, KPLC Training School, Traffic Headquarters, Mathari Hospital, Malango Kubwa, Juja Road, Huruma, Ngei I and II, Kosovo, parts of Ngumba Estate, Old Muthaiga Road, part of Thome, Survey, Safari Park Hotel, Kenya Breweries, parts of Baba Dogo light industries.

xvii. The whole of Industrial Area.

While urging the public to be patient, the agency says the works are aimed at improving reliability and ensuring a more stable water supply system once completed.

“We appeal to our customers for indulgence and urge them to use the available water sparingly as we work towards restoring the supply. Any inconvenience is highly regretted,” the company said.
