A swimming expedition by three cousins in Laikipia West turned tragic after they drowned Tuesday morning at Kanyuka dam in Nga’rua division.

According to an eyewitness who was in their company, the 12-year-olds left home to take cows to a nearby cattle dip before heading to the dam.

“They told me to look after the cows while they went swimming. After a short time, I had them scream, and when I went to see what was going on, I found one of them drowning. I ran to a nearby homestead and called for help,” she said.

At their homestead, a somber mood engulfed the village with relatives and friends yet to come to terms with the tragedy.

Laikipia County Women Representative Jane Apollos visited the home to condole with the family. She urged the County Government to fence all public dams in order to prevent such occurrences.

The bodies were recovered and taken to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital.
