Thika’s Haile Selassie road is too dark, residents say

They claim the road has become unsafe for pedestrians, especially at night when crooks take advantage of the darkness to commit crimes.

Samuel Ng'ang'a, a concerned resident, said that streetlights from around Chania bridge down the stretch are dead.

“The stretch is dark and not safe from late in the evening for people heading back home,” he said.

“We have had cases where residents are mugged on the dark road. It is sad. Kiambu county should erect street lights. The area is not safe,” he added.

Mercy Wacuka narrated to Wananchi Reporting how last month she was robbed of her mobile phone and handbag along the stretch as she was heading home around 7 pm.

“I was heading home. The area was a bit deserted since it was the festive season. Two men approached me and demanded I hand over my phone and handbag. I didn’t resist because they pointed a knife at me. I didn’t bother reporting the matter to the police,” she said.

“I hope the county government will prioritise restoring the street lights that were initially there. We need to be safe as we go about our business,” she added.
