A section of primary and secondary school teachers in training from Tharaka Nithi County have come out to demand for permanent and pensionable employment terms.

The group said a previous agreement with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for permanent terms has not been honoured.

Carrying placards during a protest on Thursday, the interns chanted, "No confirmation, no renewal. The promise must be honoured."

They have also complained about the lack of special equipment needed for JSS lessons in primary schools.

Linda Nkatha, one of the protestors, said, "We had an agreement that we would work as interns for one year and thereafter we would get permanent contracts. However, this has not been implemented."

Theophilos Mugambi, another teacher, said, "We don't understand how the story changed. We were supposed to get permanent contracts and now we are being treated like children of a lesser God."

Mambo Misiani, a branch representative of Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), said it stood with teachers and called for TSC to honour the previously bargained agreement.
