Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has expressed confidence in Kenya's preparedness for the AFCON 2027, confirming that the construction of the Raila Odinga International Stadium is now 91% complete.
Speaking during an inspection visit on Friday morning at the venue, CS Mvurya confirmed that the facility is on track to meet international standards following the incorporation of all CAF requirements into the construction schedule.
The CS highlighted several crucial areas of development, stating that work on the playing surface has started with grass seeds already planted, and the pitch is expected to be match-ready in two or three months.
Additionally, the training pitch for athletics is nearing completion and extensive work on the surrounding road network and other relevant facilities remains on schedule as AFCON approaches.
"We are very happy with the progress as the stadium is at 91% completion. This is a key facility for AFCON 2027, and we have ensured that all CAF requirements have been incorporated into the construction schedule," said CS Mvurya.
Alongside the Raila Odinga Stadium, the CS provided an update on the renovations at Kasarani Stadium, the second venue for the upcoming tournament.
The existing pitch at Kasarani is being completely replaced to meet required standards and discussions are underway regarding the addition of 61 skyboxes as recommended by CAF.
The ministry is currently evaluating how to implement these hospitality upgrades—moving from the current 52 boxes—without compromising the building's structural integrity.
CS Mvurya emphasised that the preparations are a collaborative effort among the three Pamoja hosts: Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
A joint steering committee has been established to ensure timely preparations across the three East African nations. Locally, the Ministry of Defence, Sports Kenya and various technical teams are working 24/7 to ensure all venues—including Talanta Sports City—are delivered on time.
"As a government, we are fully committed to being ready for the African continent in 2027. Every department is working tirelessly to ensure our teams and our facilities are world-class," Mvurya concluded.
