Peter Mwangi Wamiti, a suspect in the killing of Karatina businessman George Gathu, will remain in custody for a further seven days to allow the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to complete investigations.

Nyeri Senior Resident Magistrate Mary Gituma granted the prosecution additional time after the suspect’s lawyer, Juma Kendo, opposed an application seeking a 14-day extension, arguing that the initial 14 days previously granted were sufficient for investigations.

The prosecution told the court that more time was needed to enable the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to determine appropriate charges against the suspect.

It added that the firearm alleged to have been used in the shooting was surrendered to IPOA on Tuesday for ballistic examination, and noted that IPOA was yet to record a statement from the suspect.

The matter will be mentioned on February 9, when the court will determine whether the suspect will take a plea.
