Struggling Nakumatt say club not for sale

Nakumatt FC have denied reports suggesting the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) club has been put up for sale after falling into financial ruin.

In 2016 – the same year they rose to the top-flight – Nakumatt was declared one of the wealthiest clubs in the National Super League (NSL) but things have progressively deteriorated.

The financial crunch currently facing it was triggered when its main sponsors Nakumatt Holdings filed for bankruptcy in October last year but officials are adamant they won’t sell, yet.

With no player incentives, getting the squad to train together has been a challenge for head coach Anthony Mwangi and, as a result, the club’s performances in the KPL have been on a downward spiral.

Nakumatt are placed 15th on the KPL log, just two points clear of safety after winning only one of their opening seven matches.

“I can admit the fact that the club has no resources but it is not true we are willing to sell at the moment. To be honest most of the clubs are in this state because the league does not have a sponsor.

Again we are really trying our best by honouring all our fixtures but only if we can  get  any organization to chip in and  help us financially then we will be better placed,” Nakumatt Secretary General Albert Wesonga said.

KPL clubs are struggling to stay afloat following the exit of the league’s official sponsors early this year.
