Sofapaka could become the first team relegated from the Kenya Premier League this season if results go against them on Matchday 30, as the battle for survival enters a critical phase with five matches remaining.

Bottom of the table on 17 points, Sofapaka face 12th-placed Mathare United at Kasarani Annex on Saturday knowing defeat would seal their fate. Even a win would only delay the inevitable unless results elsewhere swing dramatically in their favour, leaving them with no margin for error in the run-in.

The numbers paint a grim picture. Sofapaka can only reach a maximum of 32 points if they win all their remaining matches, but their vastly inferior goal difference of -22 — compared to Ulinzi Stars’ -5 — leaves them needing more than just points to climb out of trouble.

Just above them, Bidco United (23 points) are also in must-win territory as they take on Kariobangi Sharks at Wang’uru Stadium. Sharks, on 29 points, are not yet safe either and could be dragged deeper into the scrap if they slip up.

Elsewhere, the pressure continues to build for sides hovering just above the drop zone. Posta Rangers (32 points) face a tricky away trip to Bandari in Kwale, while APS Bomet, level on 31 points with Ulinzi Stars, host KCB in Kericho in another fixture with major implications at the bottom end of the table.

Ulinzi Stars, who also have 31 points, will not be in league action this weekend due to their FKF Cup clash against Tusker, a situation that could leave them vulnerable depending on how results unfold around them.

Mathare United, currently on 34 points, are not entirely out of danger either, but victory over Sofapaka would go a long way in easing their concerns and potentially confirming their top-flight status.

With positions from 12th place downwards still unsettled and fixtures beginning to carry added weight, the relegation fight is tightening with each passing round. For Sofapaka, however, Saturday could mark the end of their stay in the top tier unless they produce a result to keep their hopes alive.
