The crash occurred at around 8:30 p.m. when the trailer, which was travelling towards Nakuru, reportedly lost control, veered into the opposite lane, and rammed into the oncoming matatu that was headed for Eldoret.
Kuresoi North Sub-County Police Commander John Kimutai confirmed the incident, saying the matatu was travelling on its rightful lane when the trailer crossed over and struck it.
"The Nissan matatu was headed for Eldoret on its rightful lane before the trailer going in the opposite direction lost control and hit it. The driver and five passengers died on the spot," Commander Kimutai said.
The Eldoret-based Sacco matatu was carrying 11 passengers at the time of the crash.
Police said two survivors sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Londiani Sub-County Referral Hospital, while the remaining survivors, including the trailer driver, were in stable condition and receiving treatment.
The bodies of the six victims were moved to Molo Mortuary pending identification and post-mortem examinations.
Both the trailer and the matatu were towed to Mau Summit Police Station as investigators work to establish the exact cause of the crash.
The accident caused a major traffic snarl-up along the busy highway before officers from Mau Summit Traffic Base arrived at the scene and restored the flow of traffic.
Police have once again urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly when driving through the Nyanja stretch, which has long been regarded as one of the country's most dangerous accident black spots.
