Siaya: Kogoye fishermen reap over one tonne after voluntary breeding ban

The fishermen agreed to suspend fishing activities in a section of the lake they identified as a critical spawning ground, allowing juvenile fish to mature and reproduce.

Throughout the closure, members took turns patrolling the area to deter illegal fishing and enforce the self-imposed ban.

Following the lifting of the closure, the fishermen reported a bumper harvest of more than one tonne of fish, saying the initiative had boosted their catches and strengthened confidence in community-led conservation as a means of protecting livelihoods.

Local Beach Management Unit (BMU) officials praised the initiative, saying it demonstrates how grassroots conservation efforts can complement government measures to combat overfishing and protect aquatic ecosystems.

They urged other beaches in Siaya and across the Nyanza region to adopt similar voluntary closures to support the recovery of declining fish stocks.
