Siaya Cholera outbreak: Three children, one adult dead as over 100 cases reported

One more person has died of Cholera in Siaya County, taking the fatalities to four - among them three children and an adult - following an outbreak of the acute diarrheal disease in the county.

Siaya Governor James Orengo told Citizen Digital that all the fatalities were recorded at Bondo sub-county hospital, further noting that more than 100 Cholera cases have been reported in the county since the outbreak was reported on April 20, 2023.

“Bondo and Rarieda have been the epicentre of the cases of Cholera and we assign that to activities along the beaches,” said Governor Orengo on Thursday when he flagged off three ambulances at the Siaya County headquarters.

“Medical staff have been going to the beaches to try to educate people about maintaining hygiene and general precautions against Cholera. Special attention is being given to the islands particularly because if you can’t deal with the cases in the first instance they can reach hospitals when it’s a little too late.”

Governor Orengo correspondingly urged Siaya residents to remain vigilant as far as hygiene is concerned and to immediately rush persons exhibiting Cholera symptoms to local health facilities.

“All we are urging people is if that if you know someone who has any form of vomiting take those cases to hospital early since they can be helped and assisted and we can avoid fatalities,” he said.

“We’ve got commodities to deal with Cholera which are valuable but in the meantime we are pleading with our people to maintain the rules of hygiene.”
