Kenya Sevens have everything to fight for on the final day of Pool A action as they prepare for a decisive showdown with Great Britain, following a difficult opening day that saw them lose both matches at the third leg of the World Sevens Championships in Valladolid, Spain.

Shujaa first fell to a heart breaking last-play defeat against Australia before being blanked 14–0 by South Africa.

The results leave Kenya bottom of the group with one point, while Great Britain sit third on two points. South Africa and Australia are tied at the summit with six points apiece.

The top two teams progress automatically to the quarterfinals, joined by the two best third-placed finishers, meaning Shujaa’s only realistic hope is to beat Great Britain and qualify as one of the best losers.

Against South Africa, Kenya started slowly and were punished for early handling errors. Sheldon van Wyk intercepted a pass from Nygel Amaitsa and sprinted clear to score under the posts, the conversion stretching the Blitzboks' lead.

Minutes later, Festus Shiasi knocked the ball forward but recovered swiftly to deny South Africa an opportunity to extend their advantage.

The Blitzboks continued to pile the pressure, and Shujaa were fortunate when an awkward bounce denied Van Wyk a second try. Kenya nearly struck back before halftime when Patrick Odongo split the defence and offloaded to Kevin Wekesa, who unfortunately knocked on at the 22-metre mark, wasting a near-certain scoring chance.

At halftime, head coach Bling Wambua introduced Menengai Oilers’ Dennis Abukuse for the electric Odongo.

However, Abukuse was sent to the sin bin shortly after coming on, giving South Africa a numerical edge. They capitalised immediately, with Sebastian Jobb finishing off a flowing move despite a determined chase from Christant Ojwang. A successful conversion sealed the 14–0 defeat.

Shujaa now head into Saturday’s clash against Great Britain knowing only a win can keep their quarterfinal dream alive.

Shujaa who are currently seventh in the SVNS Championship standings with eight points following their mixed show at Hong Kong Sevens last month, are looking for a better finish in Spain for them to stand a chance of qualifying for the World Rugby Sevens Series next season.
