Renowned Kenyan racing driver Pauline Shegu has appealed to the government to do everything within its power to ensure the country retains the prestigious WRC Safari Rally upon the lapse of the current six-year hosting agreement with the international motorsport federation, FIA.

Shegu expressed optimism that Kenya can secure a fresh agreement with the FIA, particularly following the appointment of multiple Safari Rally champion Carl Tundo as the Chief Executive Officer of the WRC Rally Project.

She noted that the rally has given Kenyan drivers an opportunity to compete against the world's best while showcasing the country's breath-taking landscapes to a global audience.

"My request is that the government should reconsider bringing back the WRC Safari rally. I can also say that there is great hope that the appointment of Carl Tundo as Chief Executive Officer of the WRC Rally Project will strengthen Kenya's chances of securing a new contract."

Since its return to the World Rally Championship calendar in 2021, the Safari Rally has earned worldwide acclaim for its unique terrain, passionate fans and excellent organisation, and Shegu believes retaining the event should remain a national priority, saying continued government support and strong leadership are essential if Kenya is to remain one of Africa's premier motorsport destinations.

"Next year, if Kenya succeeds in signing a new agreement with the FIA, I request that the competition be moved from Naivasha to other counties so that the locals in that area also have the opportunity to enjoy watching and participating in the competition, although it will depend on the FIA to see if the standards of other counties meet their criteria before it is accepted."
