SHE MEANS BUSINESS| Rugby over egos - KRU chairperson Harriet Okach speaks
Audio By Vocalize
In this week’s episode of She Means Business, the first woman to chair the union speaks about leadership, accountability, and the state of rugby in Kenya.
Okach acknowledges the challenges and controversies that have surrounded the union over the years but insists the current board is aligned on one thing: growing the game. For her, personal friendships are secondary to performance and professionalism.
“You don’t have to be friends to make rugby work,” she says. “Do the work, go home, come back and make rugby work.”
While in Kisumu, Okach watched her uncle play a role in rugby administration, sparking an early interest in the sport and its structures beyond the pitch. Over time, she followed in those footsteps, gradually carving her own path in sports leadership while balancing other professional responsibilities outside rugby.
In the episode, she reflects on the lessons she has learned navigating leadership, the importance of staying focused amid criticism, and why she believes Kenyan rugby still has immense potential.
