Serve all Kenyans equally and diligently, DIG Lagat urges new recruits

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Kenya Police Service, Eliud Lagat has directed new police recruits to serve all Kenyans equally, respect human rights and all fundamental freedoms.

While inspecting the pass-out rehearsal at the National Police College, Main Campus, Kiganjo in Nyeri County, DIG Lagat said that officers should also maintain high levels of professionalism,  accountability and dedication.

He said that they should also demonstrate competence, noting that the government was continuously investing in the capacity of the service through recruitment and training to lessen the workload and also promote national security. 

DIG Lagat also challenged the new recruits to maintain high standards of integrity and resilience, saying that self-discipline is necessary for personal growth and career advancement. He was accompanied by senior officers including all the Regional Commanders.

“This parade rehearsal goes beyond display. It demonstrates a renewed and vibrant workforce for the service that offers a reprieve from policing workload and hope for a secure nation,” Lagat said. 

“Your competence to perform as an officer to train officers to the highest possible standards of competence and integrity, and to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms and dignity,” he said, adding: “I want to remind you again that you are expected to live up to our motto of service to all (Utumishi kwa Wote), and must meet the high expectations of the citizens.” 

President William Ruto is expected to preside over the pass-out of the 5000 new recruits next week. The recruits are expected to significantly boost security preparations ahead of next year’s general election. 

“As you prepare to begin your career as a police officer, you always remember and apply the knowledge and skills gained during your training. I am confident that you have been moulded as officers to be professional, efficient, transformational, and accountable officers,” the DIG said. 

At the same time, DIG Lagat urged them to remain apolitical, professional and accountable at all times. He said that the recruitment is going to open up a lot of life changing opportunities, adding that they should also focus on personal growth and career progression. 

“You will have a golden opportunity and a chance to serve and protect Kenyans and their properties. You will as well have an opportunity to earn and provide for yourself and your families and loved ones,” he said. 

However, he added that personal growth and career progression depend on individual conduct and discipline. “If you serve with distinction, you stand high chances of both personal growth and career advancement,” he continued.

“These opportunities do not present on a silver platter. They are achieved through hard work, discipline, resilience, and sacrifice. Consequently, you must be prepared well enough to face the challenges that come with policing responsibility,” he affirmed. 

“I continue to encourage you to work even more harder, and remain disciplined, and make the best out of what you have learnt,” he said, adding: “I am confident that you have been molded as officers to be professional, efficient, transformational, and accountable officers,” he continued.
