Nominated Senator Miraj Abdillahi has called upon parliaments worldwide to place young people at the centre of peacebuilding, crisis response and post-conflict recovery.

Speaking as a panellist at the 12th Inter-Parliamentary Union Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Senator Miraj emphasised that conflicts and humanitarian crises disproportionately affect children and young people, disrupting their education, exposing them to exploitation and leaving lasting physical and psychological wounds.

“Education is not merely a pathway to employment. It is a right, a source of dignity, protection and hope. When a child experiences pregnancy, displacement or any other crisis, their dreams should not be allowed to die,” she stated.

Senator Miraj presented Kenya’s Care and Protection of Child Parents Bill, 2023, as a practical legislative response to the challenges faced by pregnant learners and child parents.

The Bill, which she sponsors, seeks to protect them from stigma and discrimination, facilitate their return to school and establish support systems that allow them to continue their education while their children receive appropriate care.

Senator Miraj challenged leaders to stop treating young people merely as victims or future beneficiaries and recognise them as present-day partners in sustaining peace, shaping public policy and rebuilding communities.

“Young people must have a seat at the table—not only after decisions have been made, but from the beginning. Protecting their education, dignity and participation is an investment in lasting peace,” she said.

The conference, held in Samarkand on 4 and 5 September 2026, brought together young legislators from across the world under the theme, “Reclaiming Human Rights, Justice and Dignity for All in Turbulent Times.”
