KSSSA Western
rugby 15s champions Kakamega High are aiming to lift the FEASSSA title, head
coach Amos Wamanga has said.
School Games: Kakamega High eye Rugby 15s regional glory“I’m happy to say that we thank God for the opportunity to participate in the East Africa this year. Uh, the mood in the camp is good, the boys are really focused.
They want to
deliver what they did not manage at the Nationals. Remember, the Nationals was
an ambush for them,” a confident Wamanga said.
Wamanga and his
technical bench are now working tirelessly to ensure the boys are fully
prepared and ready to finish top of the East Africa charts despite having many
top teams from both Kenya and Uganda.
“We had already
shifted our focus to 7s. Now this time round we are working very hard with the
15s group in terms of the preparation which is progressing so well.
The boys have
been focused and I believe if all goes as planned, we are going to confirm that
we are still the elite in East Africa,” said Wamanga.
Kakamega marched
to the nationals as Western Region champions thanks to the disqualification of
the then champions Bungoma High, over irregularities.
They had lost
12-07 to Bungoma High in the regional final.
Since 2019, The
Barbarians had not reached the nationals leave alone East Africa School Games.
He explained: “I
want to believe this time round we have knocked the door for the nationals and
the door opened and now we are heading to the East African Games.
We are fully
confident of clinching the East Africa title this year so that next year we may
be in good shape to lift both the nationals and the East Africa titles,” he
added.
Wamanga has
hailed the school principal Dr. Elphas Aliva Luvaso for maximum support as well
as the school alumni for coming through. “We have had a lot of support from the
school administration, the chief principal and the alumni in making life easier
to this particular team. The entire team feels highly motivated and ready for
what lies ahead.”
He continued: “At
Kakamega, there's a lot of balance between books and field work (training).
You'll realize that boys only come to the field 1 hour 30 minutes on weekdays. This
means that the entire time of the day from 4:00 am to around 4:00 pm they are
always in class."
