A female traffic police officer has died at Nairobi West Hospital after being struck by a hit-and-run lorry at a junction in Makadara, Nairobi.

The victim, identified as Corporal Joyce Muthoni Mwicigi (Service Number 69164), succumbed to her injuries on August 22, 2026, a day after the tragic incident.

According to police sources at Makongeni police station, Corporal Mwicigi was actively managing traffic at the intersection of Lungalunga Road and Mogadishu Road when the incident occurred at around 12:30 PM.

An Isuzu lorry, registration number KZQ 282, was travelling from the House of Manji direction toward Donholm when the officer ordered the driver to stop to allow other motorists to join Mogadishu Road.

The driver defied the verbal directive, hitting and knocking down the uniformed officer before speeding away from the scene.

The impact left Corporal Mwicigi with a fractured pelvis, facial cuts, and severe bruising.

After crashing into the officer, the fleeing lorry rammed into three other vehicles.

Emergency responders rushed Corporal Mwicigi to the Nairobi West Hospital, where she underwent treatment for approximately 26 hours before being pronounced dead at 2:10 PM the following afternoon.

Senior police officers visited the scene, and all three damaged vehicles were towed to the police yard pending official inspection.

Investigators have registered and launched a manhunt for the unknown lorry driver, who remains at large.
