Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has declared his interest in the capital’s gubernatorial seat come 2022.

Sakaja says that having been Senator for Nairobi County for nearly ten years, he knows and understands the county better than anyone. He insisted that all his friends and former opposers are of the same opinion.

“I have been listening to a lot of people who even then were not in support but now, realize, that we need someone like myself who has been in this city, has seen all this level of leadership,” he stated in an interview.

“Am currently the senator and that is the direction am heading to. To serve the people of Nairobi in the position of the governor with a proper vision of what we want to achieve within the next 10years,” he added.

The Senator confirmed the move saying that in 2016 he had the same ambition but failed to push it due to the political forces at the time.

“Initially in 2016 I was vying for the position of the governor but the political dynamics at the point did not allow me. That is why I switched to the senator. That did not change my dreams for this city. That didn’t change my vision for working capital of the global hub,” he said.

Exuding confidence about his tenure as Nairobi Senator, Sakaja said he is the right candidate for the position due to his knowledge and his track record in county affairs.

“In terms of oversight, I have brought most number of questions in the senate with respect to my county. No other senator has dealt with their county in terms of oversight in the same manner,” Sakaja stressed.

He went ahead to account for instances when he has held the county government  accountable for issues such as water, transport, demolition of schools (Martin Luther), and disaster management especially the Gikomba fires.

He further stated that he has even taken the county government to court pointing out that he sees himself as a role model for the youth.

“Beyond just doing, I think the greatest achievement has been to give hope to young people. That indeed young people can take leadership responsibly, can be in charge and take this country to the next level,” he said.
