President William Ruto has launched last-mile electrification projects worth KSh2.512 billion in Elgeiyo Marakwet and Baringo counties, targeting 12,304 households as the government expands electricity access in rural areas.

The President flagged off materials for the projects during his tour of the North Rift region, with the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) tasked with implementing 217 projects across the two counties.

In Elgeiyo Marakwet, REREC is implementing 135 projects targeting 8,975 households, backed by a government allocation of KSh1.6 billion.

In neighbouring Baringo County, 82 projects targeting 3,329 households are being implemented at a cost of KSh912 million.

The projects are expected to extend electricity access to communities that remain underserved, while supporting household activities and creating opportunities for small businesses that rely on reliable power.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, who accompanied the President during the regional tour, said 1.5 million households had been connected to electricity nationally over the past four years.

Wandayi described the progress as significant, pointing to the expansion of electricity access since the current administration took office in 2022.

The latest investment is expected to support rural enterprises, including retail shops, barbershops and welding workshops, while improving lighting in homes and providing learners with better conditions for studying after dark.

Electricity access can also help businesses improve productivity, extend operating hours and adopt equipment that would otherwise be difficult to run without a reliable power supply.

However, the impact of the programme will depend on the completion of the projects and the actual connection of the targeted households to the electricity network.

REREC's role will therefore be critical in translating the funds allocated and materials supplied into completed infrastructure and operational household connections.

The two-county initiative forms part of the government's broader efforts to expand electricity access and support economic activity in rural communities.

With 12,304 households targeted in Elgeiyo Marakwet and Baringo, the projects are expected to bring more families into the electricity network while creating opportunities for small-scale commercial activities.
