President William Ruto has praised Mombasa County for registering more than one million residents under the Social Health Authority (SHA), making it the leading county in the country in SHA enrolment.
Ruto said the government has spent Ksh.7.8 billion to provide medical cover for residents enrolled under the scheme in Mombasa, describing the county's progress as a model that should be replicated across the country.
“At least 1 million Mombasa residents have been registered at SHA in Mombasa. Today Mombasa County is number one on matters of SHA registration,” President Ruto said.
Speaking during an event in Mombasa, the President commended Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir for what he described as significant progress in the county's health sector.
“Abdulswamad has done a tremendous job in the health sector. At least 1 million people have registered, we have paid Ksh.7.8 billion for SHA in Mombasa, and that is tremendous,” Ruto said.
The President urged other counties to adopt similar measures to increase SHA registration and expand access to healthcare services.
Mombasa's performance comes as the government pushes to increase enrolment under SHA as part of its Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.
The government has been encouraging counties to mobilise residents to register with SHA, with enrolment intended to expand access to healthcare while reducing the financial burden of medical treatment on households.
