Residents of Nairobi living along Juja road have raised concerns over overflowing sewer lines and piles of uncollected garbage in the area.
The residents said that raw sewage has been flowing along the roadside for days, producing foul smell and exposing them to health risks.
They are accusing authorities of failing to collect garbage, leading to growing mountains of waste near schools and businesses.
“I can hardly open my windows because of the bad smell. Our children often wade through dirty water on their way to the playground or school,” said Jimmy Maina, a resident of Mlango Kubwa.
Many traders operating along the road said the situation has affected business, with many customers avoiding the area.
Vivian Wanja, a food vendor in the area, told Wananchi Reporting that the overflowing sewer has pushed away clients as many fear catching diseases should there be an outbreak.
“Residents no longer want to buy food from establishment near the road because the environment is very dirty,” said Wanja.
The people are now calling on Nairobi County officials and other relevant agencies to urgently drain and repair broken sewer lines and collect garbage before the situation worsens.
Many have warned that continued neglect could lead to diseases such as cholera and typhoid, especially during the rains.
