Thousands of
supporters of the late former Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila
Odinga on Friday turned up across the country to mark one year since his
passing.
In Nairobi, ODM
Chairperson Gladys Wanga led the candle-lighting ceremony alongside other
broad-based-leaning leaders at Uhuru Park, where they remembered Odinga as a
patriotic leader who put Kenya first.
The
celebrations were witnessed in Kisumu, Kisii, Mombasa and other areas where the
former Prime Minister commanded support.
Armed with
candles, flags and whistles, the people turned up in style at the historic
Uhuru Park grounds in Nairobi to remember their departed leader who passed on
about a year ago.
From his
favourite tunes, to the songs which powered his campaigns in 2017 and 2022,
Odinga was remembered through song and dance as his supporters, who have stuck
with him in life and in death, sang along in memory of his lasting legacy.
The leaders
remembered the former Prime Minister as a patriot.
Similar scenes
were witnessed in Kisii town.
A multitude of
Odinga’s supporters took to the streets in his memory, painting the streets
orange with candlelight.
In Mombasa, the
event was led by Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir as the leaders
converged to remember their fallen leader.
Kisumu,
Odinga’s boyhood city and political backyard, also witnessed the celebrations,
as the candle-lighting ceremony continued through the night.
The
celebrations continue throughout the month of October.
